Community Dentistry

Programme of Study
The Master of Public Health (Oral Health) – MPH (Oral Health) is a programme conducted by coursework and dissertation. It is based on the Primary Health Care Approach towards attaining health for all. The course is partly conducted in collaboration with the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya and comprises of 2 stages:
 Admission Requirements
1.Qualification for Admission
  A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree in Dentistry and have at least  two years post-registration clinical experience in dentistry.
2.English Requirements
   Foreign nationals must have at least a score of 5.5 IELTS or 550 TOELF if their  first degree was obtained from universities which do not use English as their main language if instruction
3.Other Requirement
   Passed the assessment for admission as prescribed by the Department.


Duration of Study
This programme of study shall extend over a minimum period of four years and a maximum period of six years.
Structure of Programme of Study
1. This programme consists of 2 Stages :
    a) STAGE I comprising of a coursework component ,supervised field visits and a research component leading to a Dissertation over a period of two (2 ) years.
    b) STAGE II comprising of Experiential Learning , Field Postings, Case Study Project, Community Development Project and Presentation at scientific conference over a period of two years.
2. The details of the course are as approved by the Senate from time to time on the recommendation of the Faculty and will be made known to the candidates at the beginning of the session.

Program Duration And Academic Year
4 years ( 8 semesters)
Admission for the course is at the beginning of the academic year (May/June)
Selection of candidates is usually made before April.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Division of Community Dentistry (DCD) of the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry is to:
   · Engage students in progress toward achieving competence in dental public health skills
   · Lead IUSD faculty, students, and staff toward fulfilling IUSD's responsibility to communities in Indiana
   · Provide information for students and faculty on the function of public and private agencies related to health
   · Provide experiential education, linked with community service and course objectives, which cannot be provided in a traditional classroom or clinical setting
   · Enable student service, reflection and action in the community, among diverse population groups
   · Promote interdisciplinary community based research
   · Be recognized by the community and professionals as essential for the   improvement and maintenance of oral and general health

   · DCD community based efforts need to be strongly linked to IUSD educational, research, and service missions

   · In addition to knowledge of health science, students should be familiar with the legislative processes for promoting health through public policy
Objectives
   · Develop public health competencies in undergraduate and graduate students
   · Promote the development of service-learning as an experiential learning methodology
   · Develop IUSD's capacity to interact with the community for the purpose of reducing disparities in access to oral health care and improving oral and general health for all
   · Promote interdisciplinary service, learning and research which involves dentistry, other health professions and diverse academic disciplines, including the Indiana University School of Medicine Master of Public Health (MPH) Program, which have impact on health policy and community development
   · Enhance visibility of IUSD's community service and learning\
   · Secure funding for the Division of Community Dentistry and for community based programs
