MDA President's Message from Dr John Ting Sii OngDate 01.03.2016
President message for MDA Website February 2016
What a triumph! The 23rd MDA SCATE, 14 – 17 January 2016 at PWTC, Kuala Lumpur, has just concluded. Our second largest annual dental meet, after MIDEC, was attended by more than 1300 delegates and 300 exhibitors. Everyone were (and still are) buzzing it on the social media and were truly delighted and enjoyed to be part of it. I couldn‟t agree more that the organizing committee was absolutely impeccable and for someone who knows the amount of organizational work, sleepless nights, and true sacrifice that is needed to pull off an event as large and as lively like this, I just wanted to congratulate all of you for making it such a success. Indeed, it surpassed all our expectations and hopes, especially the many challenges the association is facing in the year 2016. However, all these will be meaningless if all the hard work were not translated for the benefit of our members. My sincere heartfelt thanks to all our members for your continuous support to theassociation. Indeed, your attendance was truly important for it added “life” to the event.
The wide range of speakers was just fantastic! Our keynote speakers, Dr Ronaldo Hirata, and Dr Markus Lenhard, certainly didn‟t disappoint us. In fact, due to the overwhelming response from the delegates, and upon the request of the delegates, some of the workshops (and masterclass) needed extra sessions (and seats). I also wish to take this opportunity to thank Singapore Dental Association and FDI for sponsoring their speakers at this annual dental meet. As part of our CSR to the society, our concurrent session on Autism Symposium for Oral Health Care Providers was also attended by parents of children with Autism. A special note of thanks to National Autism Society of Malaysia who assisted in promoting this to their members.
Alongside the scientific programme, the international dental trade exhibition, with a stronghold of 110 booths, had showcased the latest products, trends and technologies. The exhibition was not only well received by the delegates but also by visitors (non-delegates) with our systems registering a staggering 550 visitors. In fact, this year‟s arrangement was based on the concept to allow our delegates to “SHOP” and “DINE” at the same place. Despite, the economic challenges in the year 2016, our record on sales made by the exhibitors was very positive. My heartfelt gratitude to all the dental trade exhibitors for their participation as their presence had indeed complimented this convention in many ways for the benefit of all. I trust that the success of the 23rd MDA SCATE 2016 will continue to move the association to organise even better dental meets in the future.
We are pleased to inform that MDA is engaging Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) for our Dental Practitioners Indemnity Insurance (DPI) to serve as an alternative choice to the present scheme. In fact, JLT has made its first public engagement with the members at the 23rd MDA SCATE 2016. This DPI is a new tailor-made product for the dental profession developed by JLT Sdn Bhd in conjunction with and endorsed by MDA. The product is insured by QBE Insurance Malaysia Berhad. The JLT Group is a world leader in insurance and re-insurance broking, risk management advice, employee benefits administration and consultancy. Quoted on the London Stock Exchange, JLT operates out of more than 100 offices in over 40 territories and employs more than 9,500 personnel. JLT has been in Malaysia since 1981 and is one of the largest insurance broking companies in Malaysia. QBE Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad is part of the QBE Group‟s Asia Pacific division and first entered the Malaysian market in 1905.
In our on-going effort to promote oral health awareness among the public, MDA will once again be directly involved with 2 large scale oral health awareness programs in the month of March 2016. Firstly, MDA will be partnering with Colgate-Palmolive Malaysia for the annual national Oral Health Month campaign, which will take place throughout the month of March in conjunction with World Dental Federation‟s (FDI) World Oral Health Day. The theme for this year‟s Oral Health Month campaign is „Keep Malaysia Smiling’. What we would like to achieve from Oral Health Month 2016 is aligned with the National Oral Health Plans for Year 2020 goals; which is to achieve an overall improvement in oral health and quality of life of Malaysians. I also wish to take this opportunity to thank all the participating dental clinics who have offered free dental check – ups to the public this year. The official launching of this event is on the 9th March 2016 and will be held at Empire Hotel, Subang, Selangor. The other large scale event is the World Oral Health Day (WOHD) 2016, sponsored by Wrigley‟s Malaysia, official launching will be on the 20th March 2016 at IOI City Mall Putrajaya. I urge all members to take part in these annual events, be it directly or indirectly.
The Constitution Amendments Committee under the leadership of Dr Paul Lee Chu Kob, has made put in tremendous effort and time to amend the MDA constitution. The draft of the amended Constitution was uploaded on the MDA website for engagement by the members. I wish to thank all our members who have actively participated and submitted their views and opinions on the draft for further deliberation by the committee. The amended constitution shall be presented to the House at the upcoming MDA Annual General Meeting.
I wish to remind all our members to come in full strength and in unison to fulfil our duties and responsibilities to the association by attending our 73rd MDA AGM scheduled to held on 26th June 2016 (Sunday). Please kindly visit our website to keep your selves updated on this matter.
Dental Bill 2016
The new dental bill is anticipated to be tabled in parliament in May 2016. The bill has been a long time coming since the first amendments committee met more than 10 years ago. There were so many planned amendments to the Dental Act 1971 that it was finally decided to table it as a new dental act instead of just having some amendments. MDA has made a chronology report on the Dental Bill 2016 to our members in mid Feb. A questionnaire has also been distributed to all dental professionals to gather their views on 2 important issues, ie, credentialing & penalties. MDA really hopes the dental professionals can take part actively. With high numbers of participation, the result of the questionnaire hopefully would be more convincing to the Health Minister for his consideration of the views of the masses.
Last but not least, our preparation for the upcoming biggest annual dental meet, MIDEC, is scheduled to be held at Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, from 28th to 31st July 2016. This is an event not to be missed and I strongly urge all of you to make full use of this opportunity to meet well renowned local and international speakers right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Please visit our website regularly for updates of the scientific program.
