Preventive Dentistry - Why?

Your teeth and your children's teeth are irreplaceable. If cared for they can last a lifetime. If neglected, the pain, inconvenience and cost of restoring them to original health and function can be very great, if indeed no impossible.

Your dental health is a valuable asset. with this simple four-point Tooth Protection Plan, your teeth and gums will stay strong and healthy.

There are two main reasons for brushing your teeth : to remove the plaque that cause decay; and to massage your gums, which stimulates circulation and keeps them healthy. But what is the best way to brush and what else can you do fir the health of your teeth and gum?

1. Brush Your Teeth At Least Twice A Day

It's very easy to brush your teeth without really thinking about what you are doing. after all, most adults have probably already brushed their teeth somewhere between 10,000 and 50,000 times.

Repeat anything that often and you tend to do it without too much thought! So next time you brush, take your time and think about it.

A Proper brushing should take about 3 minutes, and ideally you should brush after every meal. However, it is essential to brush at least twice every day. Here are a few important points to keep in mind :

  • When brushing your teeth, try not to "scrub" too hard as this can actually damage your teeth and gum. It's better to use a gentle, massaging action and a soft-bristled brush.
  • Hold your brush at an angle to your teeth and work the bristle into the gumline. This is where plaque tends to accumulate and gum problems begin.

2. Use A Fluoride Toothpaste

You get only one set of adult (permanent) teeth, so it's important to look after them. There is no question that regular and efficient brushing with a fluoride toothpaste is one of the best treatments you can give to your teeth.

There are millions of bacteria in your mouth. Fortunately, not all bacteria cause disease. However, when plaque builds up between the tooth and the gum, the harmful bacteria get to work.

Bacteria and sugar produce acids which attacks the teeth and causes tooth decay and gum inflammation. when you brush your teeth it is to remove plaque to stop both tooth decay and gum disease and , of course, to freshen your breath.

3. A Balanced And Nutritious Diet Is Good

Without the right nutrients, your teeth and gums can become more susceptible to decay and gum disease.

Sugar is one of the main causes of dental problems. Here are a few ways to cut down :

  • Try to choose sugar-free snacks.
  • Add less sugar to coffee or tea.
  • Read lists of ingredients when you're grocery shopping : honey, molasses, glucose and fructose are all types of sugar.

4. A Regular Check-up Is The Most Important Thing You Can Do

Regular check-ups aren't just about cavities - and they aren't just for kids. And they aren't just for when you have dental pain either. Check-ups can prevent all kinds of dental problems.

Even if you are diligent about brushing and flossing, your teeth and gums still need regular care from a dental professional. A regular check-up takes little time, doesn't cost a lot, and goes a long way towards preventing dental problems and towards spotting problems before they become serious.

Generally, it's good idea to have a check-up every six months. But depending on a number of factors - existing dental problems, the likelihood of new problems, the effectiveness of your personal care program, your rate of tartar build-up, and so on - your dentist may suggest that you visit more or less often.

Our skin is growing all the time. If we damage it, it repairs itself. If we break a bone, it can heal itself. We can build up our muscles with exercise and improve our physical fitness by increasing the efficiency of heart and lungs. But our teeth do not have these advantages.

They are formed early in our early years and stay that way for life, apart from wear and decay. You can keep your teeth for life, but you have to work at it. Sound teeth don't just happen, fight dental decay and gum problems with a comprehensive insurance programme :-

  • Brush thoroughly every day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Brush your teeth at least two times or after every meal.
  • See your dentist for regular check-ups.
